Feature Idea: Exception Chaining

This is a request to support exception chaining in APM with the Python agent.

In one place in my code I’m catching and throwing a new exception like this:

except Exception as ex:
    raise FooError(str(ex)) from ex

where I’m using exception chaining to supplement the stack trace so that it doesn’t get lost.

In the NewRelic APM Error logs, the stack trace is only visible for the top most exception, while the built-in function traceback.format_exc(), prints both stack traces.

New Relic Edit

  • I want this too
  • I have more info to share (reply below)
  • I have a solution for this
