Latest agent skews the 5 minutes time picker for storage

#1

We are about half way through upgrading our agents and I have noticed that now when we view storage in the dashboard the graph is skewed on the 5 minute time picker. The lines zig zag instead of providing a readable graph. Here is the permalink to show what we see. This is only happening with the newer agents.
https://infrastructure.newrelic.com/accounts/866301/hosts/storage?timeStart=1568291159000&timeEnd=1568291459255
What can be done to fix this?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi @mwilkinson1,

That zig zag pattern you’re seeing is due to the size of the “buckets” that are used to visualize the samples collected by the Infrastructure agent. The 5-minute interval you’ve selected in that link is small enough that the “buckets” being used to aggregate the samples are smaller than the intervals between samples, so they are visualized as 0 values. If you extend the time interval to 10 minutes, the “bucket” increase to cover the interval between samples and the graph smooths out.

If we look at the query the graph is generated with in Insights, it looks like this:

SELECT average(diskUsedPercent) FROM StorageSample TIMESERIES FACET `entityAndMountPoint` ... LIMIT 100 SINCE 1568291159000 UNTIL 1568291459000

The TIMESERIES clause can take arguments to specify the “bucket” size, like so:

SELECT average(diskUsedPercent) FROM StorageSample TIMESERIES 1 minute FACET `entityAndMountPoint` ... LIMIT 100 SINCE 1568291159000 UNTIL 1568291459000

Since there’s more than one storage sample gathered in a minute, the graph smooths out. @Fidelicatessen wrote a great Level Up post about how the visualizations work with charts in Infrastructure and Insights which goes into further detail.
